brejeirices

the age of innocence

ellen olenska: i think we should look at reality, not dreams.
newland archer: i just want us to be together!
ellen olenska: i can't be your wife, newland! is it your idea that I should live with you as your mistress?
newland archer: i want... somehow, i want to get away with you... and... and find a world where words like that don't exist!
ellen olenska: newland, you couldn't be happy if it meant being cruel. if we act any other way i'll be making you act against what i love in you most. and i can't go back to that way of thinking. don't you see? i can't love you unless I give you up
newland archer: you gave me my first glimpse of a real life. then you asked me to go on with the false one. no one can endure that.
ellen olenska: i'm enduring it.

up in the air

ryan bingham: i thought I was a part of your life.
alex goran: i thought we signed up for the same thing... i thought our relationship was perfectly clear. you are an escape. you're a break from our normal lives. you're a parenthesis.
ryan bingham: i'm a parenthesis?
(...)
alex goran: call me when you're feeling lonely.
(...)
ryan bingham: i'm feeling lonely right now...

pulp fiction

mia wallace: don't you hate that?
vincent vega: hate what?
mia wallace: uncomfortable silences. why do we feel it's necessary to yak about bullshit in order to be comfortable?
vincent vega: i don't know. that's a good question.
mia wallace: that's when you know you've found somebody really special: you can just shut the fuck up for a minute and comfortably share silence.

out of sight

jack foley: it's like seeing someone for the first time... like you could be passing on the street, and you look at each other and for a few seconds... there's this kind of a recognition... like you both know something. the next moment, the person's gone, and it's too late to do anything about it. and you always remember it, because it was there, and you let it go, and you think to yourself, "what if i had stopped? if I had said something?".
karen sisco: what if?
jack foley: what if?
karen sisco: and it may only happen a few times in your life.
jack foley: or once.

the fabulous baker boys

jack baker: listen to me princess. we fucked twice. that's it. once the sweat dries, you still don't know shit about me. got it?
susie diamond: i know one thing. while frank baker was home putting his kids to sleep last night, little brother jack was out dusting off his dreams for a few minutes. i was there. i saw it in your face. you're full of shit. you're a fake. every time you walk into some shitty daiquiri hut, you're selling yourself on the cheap. hey, i know all about that. i'd find myself at the end of the night with some creep and tell myself it didn't matter. and you kid yourself that you've got this empty place inside where you can put it all. but you do it long enough and all you are is empty.
jack baker: i didn't know whores were so philosophical.
susie diamond: at least my brother's not my pimp. you know, i had you pegged for a loser the first time i saw you, but i was wrong. you're worse. you're a coward.

sideways

maya: can i ask you a personal question, miles?
miles: sure.
maya: why are you so in to pinot? i mean, it's like a thing with you.
miles: i don't know, i don't know. it's a hard grape to grow, as you know. right? it's uh, it's thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early. it's, you know, it's not a survivor like cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and uh, thrive even when it's neglected. no, pinot needs constant care and attention. you know? and in fact it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. and, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. only somebody who really takes the time to understand pinot's potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. then, i mean, oh its flavors, they're just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet.

when harry met sally

sally: well, basically it's the same dream i've been having since i was twelve.
harry: which is?
sally: okay, there's this guy...
harry: what does he look like?
sally: i don't know, he's just sort of faceless.
harry: faceless guy, okay.
sally: he RIPS off my clothes.
(pause)
harry: and?
sally: that's it.
harry: that's it? some faceless guy rips off all your clothes, and that's the sex fantasy you've been having since you were twelve?
sally: well, sometimes i vary it a little.
harry: which part?
sally: what i'm wearing.

before sunrise

jesse: i feel like this is, uh, some dream world we're in, y'know.
celine: yeah, it's so weird. it's like our time together is just ours. it's our own creation. it must be like i'm in your dream, and you in mine, or something.
jesse: and what's so cool is that this whole evening, all our time together, shouldn't officially be happening.
celine: yeah, i know. maybe that's why this feels so otherworldly.
