alex naidus (baixo), kip berman (guitarra/voz), kurt feldman (bateria) e peggy wang-east (teclados/voz) juntaram-se em 2007, em nova iorque, para formarem os the pains of being pure at heart, banda que nos remete imediatamente para o início dos anos 90, para o estilo musical apelidado de "shoegaze", onde pontificaram bandas como os my bloody valentine, ride e the jesus and mary chain. neste disco de estreia, que tem o mesmo nome da banda, conseguem ainda ouvir-se influências de uma outra banda britânica marcante: the smiths. a propósito de todas estas influências sonoras, o site all music guide escreveu "it all could come off like a pastiche with little more than nostalgic value but the band acts as if it were the first time anyone ever captured this kind of sound, never sitting back and aping the past but instead giving it a healthy boost". a banda gravou inicialmente um ep para a editora painbow, em 2008, tendo o primeiro disco sido lançado em fevereiro passado, pela editora slumberland, tendo obtido excelentes críticas por parte da imprensa especializada, tornando-se rapidamente numa das bandas mais faladas do início de 2009. o all music guide termina assim a crítica ao disco: "a little more variation from song to song, a little more of their own sound, or another song or two as compelling as the best stuff here and the POBPAH's debut would have been classic. settling for impressive is fair enough and good enough for fans of loud, fuzzy, and heartfelt indie noise pop".
